Male Hair Removal - Trimming Hair

Trimming, cutting or shaving is a method of removing hair using a blade, machine, scissors or any other tool used to cut the hair at skin level. It is the most common way for men to remove their facial hair.

Hair on the neck, chest, abdomen, legs, armpits and pubic area is also sometimes trimmed.

Shaving the hair on the head is usually associated with religious practices, the military, some sports (swimming, running and extreme sports), patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments or simply to disguise more intense forms of baldness.

Historically, shaving the head has also been associated with a form of punishment and submission to authority.

Before the invention of razors, hair was sometimes removed using shells or water and a sharp implement. These methods were used by some North American tribes before the arrival of the English colonizers.

When copper utensils were invented, around 3000 years BC, the first razor blades also appeared. The idea of an aesthetic approach to personal hygiene may have started around this time, although Egyptian priests had already practiced something similar.

Alexander the Great actively promoted shaving during his reign in the 4th century, as a way of preventing the enemy from grabbing his beard in a dangerous way during battles and also because he believed it made him look more groomed.

Myth or reality

Shaving or trimming makes hair grow thicker, darker and rougher.

Myth!

Hair that hasn't been cut has a fine, smooth tip, whereas after cutting it has a blunt, edged tip, making it appear thicker and rougher. The fact that shorter hairs are stiffer (less flexible) than longer hairs also contributes to this effect.

Hair appears darker when it starts to grow back because hair that has never been cut is usually lighter due to sun exposure.

In addition, as we get older, hair tends to grow rougher and in more places on the body. For example, a teenager might start trimming his beard at 16, but as he gets older the hair starts to grow more abundantly and thicker, leading some people to believe that it was due to shaving, whereas in reality it's just part of the ageing process.
