Relaxation massage benefits flexibility, increases circulation, soothes muscle pain and, from a psychological point of view, releases stress and creates a feeling of well-being and joy.

Relaxation massage promotes improved blood circulation, increasing the flow of nutrients and removing catabolites and metabolites (toxic substances from cells) that are harmful to the body, thus providing pain relief and facilitating muscle activity.

How is relaxation massage performed?

The technique used in relaxation massage includes gentle, firm movements all over the body, relaxing the muscles and relieving tension. The massage is done with the application of oils or creams, bringing effective well-being and a feeling of comfort and tranquillity.

Some basic movements included in the relaxation massage:

Glides

A smoothing movement performed with the entire surface of the palm of one or both hands. When performed slowly, smoothing helps the patient to relax. This movement is also useful when joining sequences of other movements.

The therapeutic effects of this massage technique are generated mainly through a direct mechanical impact on the tissues and in parallel through the sensory nervous system. These movements can provide significant relaxation, producing a sedative effect that relieves pain and muscle spasm.

Kneading

Kneading is a relaxing massage technique in which the muscles and subcutaneous tissues are alternately compressed and released. During the pressure phase of each movement, the hand and skin move together over the deeper structures. During the release (relaxation) phase, the hand (or hands) gently glides to an adjacent area and the movement is repeated.

By alternately compressing and relaxing the muscles, the veins (both superficial and deep) are alternately emptied and filled. This relieves congestion in the capillary beds and improves the flow of blood from the arterioles to the capillaries.

The flow of lymph is stimulated by the same mechanism.

Vigorous kneading causes vasodilation in the skin. The skin is mobilized by the manipulations and this promotes its elasticity.

Frictions

Frictions are relaxation massage techniques that consist of brief, localized and deeply penetrating movements performed in a circular direction. These deep movements are usually performed by the fingertips, although the pad of the thumb or palm can also be used.

The deep, continuous pressure on the tissues causes local damage and releases a substance similar to histamine and other metabolites that act directly on the capillaries and arterioles at the site, causing vasodilation. The magnitude of the response depends on the depth of the manipulation and the duration of the application of this massage technique.
